What Porcelain Veneers Can Do for You?

Porcelain Veneers in Valdosta, GAPorcelain veneers are the most powerful procedure in cosmetic dentistry. We aren’t exaggerating when we say that veneers can essentially give you an entirely new set of teeth. They can help if your teeth are:

  • Discolored
  • Chipped
  • Small or poorly shaped
  • Gapped
  • Crooked
  • Crowded
  • Rotated

And porcelain veneers can do a better job at treating these problems than competing treatments, too. Porcelain veneers can whiten teeth that teeth whitening can’t. And while teeth whitening results may last for months, porcelain veneers can last for years, even decades.

While dental bonding can help with chipped, small, or poorly shaped teeth, bonding lasts only a couple years while porcelain veneers can last a couple decades. And porcelain veneers look more natural than bonding, and are more stain resistant as well.

And while orthodontics can be used to close gaps in your teeth, straighten crooked teeth, and resolve crowding and rotated teeth, porcelain veneers can do it faster. Orthodontics takes a year or more. Porcelain veneers take a month or less–and you don’t have to wear a retainer.

Best of all, porcelain veneers can do it all in one procedure. People who get teeth whitening or orthodontics often find that correcting one problem reveals others. But with porcelain veneers, you get the exact smile you want.

How Porcelain Veneers Work

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of advanced ceramics that are bonded to the visible surfaces of your teeth. Depending on what your cosmetic goals are, they may cover the front, sides, and even biting edge of your teeth.

The porcelain veneers process begins with a consultation where we’ll talk about your cosmetic complaints and what you hope to achieve. We will discuss how many porcelain veneers it will take to achieve the results you desire, and whether other treatments might be necessary to ensure the health and longevity of your veneers.

At your next appointment we will finalize your smile design and prepare your teeth to receive the veneers. We will talk about different options and tweak the design so that you can get exactly the smile you desire. Preparing your teeth may involve removing some amount of tooth structure, which may just be a light etch to enhance bonding, but if we’re dramatically reshaping or moving the teeth, we may need to remove more material. If any significant amount of tooth material is removed, you’ll receive temporary veneers to wear. These look attractive, but aren’t very durable.

On your third visit, a couple of weeks later, we will fit you with your permanent veneers. We will confirm that they meet your expectations and then permanently bond them to your natural teeth.

Are Porcelain Veneers Fragile?

For most of us, “porcelain” means fragile. But the truth is that porcelain actually refers to the whiteness of the ceramic. Dental veneers are made of advanced ceramics that have a tensile strength of around 60,000 pounds per square inch! That’s almost ten times as strong as your tooth enamel. This is not to say that they’re immune to cracking, but they’re very strong. Studies show about 19 out of 20 veneers are intact and in place after ten years, and five out of six are in place after 20 years.

Porcelain veneers are also glazed, which makes them smooth and stain resistant. After about ten years of brushing with normal toothpaste, the glaze can wear off and acidic foods and beverages can contribute to its wear, but brushing with a gentle toothpaste and taking care with acidic foods can help your veneers last longer.
