Why You Should Whiten Your Teeth at the Dentist

Teeth whitening is one of the most demanded cosmetic dentistry procedures in the US. That’s partly because our teeth naturally get stained over time–and none of us is getting any younger! Plus our love of staining foods and beverages like berries, red wine, coffee, tea, and chocolate doesn’t make it any easier.

There are many teeth whitening products available at the IGA, CVS, and many other shops in Valdosta. But there are good reasons to get your teeth whitened at the dentist.

Teeth whitening, before and after

Find Out If Your Teeth Are Healthy for Whitening

Before you start teeth whitening, it’s important to make sure that your teeth and gums are healthy. Although teeth whitening is safe for healthy teeth, it can contribute to problems if your teeth and gums aren’t healthy. This can include serious sensitivity, accelerated decay, and receding gums. Plus poor oral health can interfere with your results (see below).

It’s best to make sure your teeth are in good shape before you start whitening them. That way, you’ll get the best experience and the best results.

Find Out If Whitening Will Work for You

It’s also important to understand that teeth whitening won’t work for all discolored teeth. Teeth whitening works great for removing stains from food, beverages, and even cigarettes, but that may not be why your teeth are discolored.

Your teeth may be discolored because they have decay (cavities). Cavities can discolor regions of the teeth, but they can also discolor the entire tooth, especially if you have an infected tooth. Your tooth fillings can also discolor your teeth. If you have old metal amalgam fillings, they can cause your teeth to turn dark in color. Teeth whitening won’t help with this staining.

Your teeth may also turn dark in color if they experience trauma. It can mean that the tooth is bruised or possible even dead inside, which would require root canal therapy to treat.

Tooth can also turn dark if your enamel has been worn away by acid, such as from soda or from stomach acid released by GERD. Teeth whitening won’t improve the appearance of these teeth–it may make it worse!

In cases where teeth whitening won’t work, we can help with porcelain veneers or crowns that will cover the discolored teeth and give you a bright white smile.

Better Results

Teeth whitening products that you get at the store can be effective, but their effectiveness is limited. The whiteners used in the product is weaker to be extra safe because people are supposed to use them without supervision.

But when you get teeth whitening at the dentist, we can use strong whiteners that can give you the maximum brightening for your teeth. And we can teach you how to use them safely and effectively.

Another problem with store-bought trays is that they don’t always whiten evenly. Strips, trays, and swabs can be hard to use effectively. The result can be teeth that only partially whiten, which doesn’t look good at all. But with whitening in our office, we’ll make sure you get the best possible results for all your teeth.
