Don’t Forget to Mention These Health Concerns to Your Dentist

Oral health is an essential part of your overall health. And as a holistic dentistry practice, Dr. Nelson Clements and team work hard to treat your entire health, not just your teeth. In fact, there are many health complaints you may have that we can help you get relief from. Here are a few of the most important ones that you should always mention at your next dental visit.

Headaches

Headaches are a common symptom, and it can be hard to track down the exact cause. If you’re not sure what’s causing your headaches or if you’re not getting good results from current headache treatments, mention it to your dentist. There are many headache causes that we can help with.

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ or TMD) can cause headaches, even migraines. Many times a cavity or infected tooth might be experienced as a headache. And let’s not forget sleep apnea, which can cause morning headaches.

Tingling or Weakness in Limbs

Yeah, we know: it doesn’t seem like this could be related to a dental problem, but there are actually many links here.

TMJ is a potential cause of tingling and weakness in your limbs. In fact, this was a symptom that Dr. Clements himself experienced. He was told he was going to have to give up his career, but then neuromuscular dental treatment resolved the problem and here he is, still working decades later.

Tingling and weakness in your fingers is often the first warning for diabetic neuropathy. Diabetes is a condition that can be closely linked with gum disease. It can make gum disease worse, but treating gum disease can also help manage your diabetes.

Another potential cause of nerve damage is overuse of denture adhesives. If you’ve been relying on adhesives to keep your dentures in place and start to experience this problem, it may be time to look for another solution.

Finally, this may be an indicator of nerve damage related to mercury poisoning from metal amalgam fillings.

Fatigue and Daytime Sleepiness

Fatigue and daytime sleepiness are the hallmarks of sleep apnea. If you are experiencing these symptoms regularly, it’s probably true that you have sleep apnea and should talk to a doctor about it.

But your dentist can help you find a more comfortable, convenient alternative to CPAP machines.

Fatigue is also sometimes reported by people who experience mercury poisoning.

Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction can be a complex phenomenon with multiple potential causes. Gum disease may be one contributing cause. Men with gum disease are up to three times more likely to experience erectile dysfunction.

Sleep apnea may also be a contributing factor. Men with sleep apnea are much more likely to experience erectile dysfunction–and sleep apnea treatment may be more effective than medications in providing relief.

Pregnancy

Not only do we like to know the good news about your growing family, but we can help make sure you have the healthiest possible pregnancy. Pregnancy means additional challenges for maintaining good oral health–and additional incentives, too. A healthy mouth makes for a healthy pregnancy. Women with gum disease are more likely to experience pregnancy complications.
