Cosmetic Dentistry, and the Disguises of Count Olaf

At the beginning of April, the second season of the Netflix Original, A Series of Unfortunate Events debuted. Based of the book series of the same name, it follows the quite unfortunate Baudelaire orphans as they try to unravel the secrets behind their parents’ murder while thwarting the many plans of Count Olaf’s to steal their family’s fortune.

Count Olaf is the obvious antagonist of the series. He is both incredibly incompetent but surprisingly effective at disguising himself from everyone but the Baudelaires. That’s partially because most of the adults in this story are useless, but also because he works to disguise at least two of his three most noticeable traits: his ankle tattoo, his single eyebrow, and his notoriously bad teeth.

Cosmetic Dentistry: Not a Disguise

What Can Cosmetic Dentistry Do For You?

Like A Series of Unfortunate Events, it can be easy to feel as if your teeth can somehow give you away. Over the phone or with your mouth closed, you might feel confident in what you’re doing, but when you feel someone has seen your teeth, that confidence wanes. Cosmetic dentistry is oral care focused on improving the appearance of your teeth. Cosmetic dentistry can hone in on the imperfections in your smile and provide significant restorative benefits.

What Imperfections Can Cosmetic Dentistry Correct?

In Count Olaf’s case, it’s obvious that he never took oral care too seriously. His teeth show significant stains, and are uneven and chipped. These are the sort of inadequacies cosmetic dentistry is designed to correct. Teeth whitening, one of the most common cosmetic dental procedures out there, uses a concentrated chemical solution, usually in the form of a peroxide, to break down staining molecules that have become trapped in your enamel, leaving your teeth up to six shades whiter.

What if My Teeth Have Multiple Imperfections?

With procedures such as teeth whitening, your teeth can only get as white as your enamel allows. However, if your teeth don’t respond to whitening or if you’re embarrassed by several aspects of your smile, there is a solution. Dental veneers or porcelain veneers are a thin shell of advanced ceramic bonded to the visible surfaces of your teeth. Depending on your own cosmetic goals, they can cover the front, sides, and even the biting edges of your teeth. Because they’re not limited by natural tooth matter, porcelain veneers can lead to the most dramatic changes in your smile. They can fix chips, discoloration, poorly shaped teeth, or crooked teeth.

If you’ve ever felt embarrassed by your smile, you might take a cue from Count Olaf. Much like porcelain veneers, Gunther, one of Olaf’s many disguises in the second season, utilizes a set of pearly whites to disguise himself from the police looking for him.

Cosmetic dentistry keep help in many ways. If you’re Count Olaf, it can help you disguise yourself for another dastardly plan, but if you’re just normal, cosmetic dentistry can leave you feeling more happy and confident about your smile.
